Chapter five:

Romance in the Beater-wagon

People come beating for many different reasons.
There are the career beaters who, basically, like to earn a bit of money.
There are the BOGIS, who like the power it gives them and the feeling of being in charge...
There are pensioners who love a day out with the added benefit of being paid for it. pole-dancing2
There are the dog-lovers who really enjoy seeing working dogs and perhaps give their own pet a chance to work a bit and a very good long walk.
There are the gourmets who look forward to a free, well-cooked meal. ( These are sometimes disappointed if served what is known as pastry-pie or sausage casserole)
There are the gossips who love a chat and to find out what is happening in their area. The beater-wagon is a first-class source of information.
Then , we have just discovered , through Deidre Camembert, there are the romantics, who come in the hope of meeting their soul-mate, or possibly just body-mate, out beating.
Now, the chances of romance in the wagons is not that good, the truth be known. This is partly due to the average age of beaters ( around 65), and partly to the fact that some shoots have a mainly male work-force, whereas others have mainly female beaters.
Will the two ever meet up?
We look forward to the next installment of M/s Camembert's Diary with the outmost anticipation.
It appears that she has already observed an ongoing romance.
She may not be alone, we all remember Lady Chatterly. If we're old enough. Possibly those in the age-group to remember Lady Chatterly and her sexy game-keeper are a trifle old for romance in the beater-transport.
We all live in hope though. And there are a some attractive game-keepers about...
The typical beater outfit is far from sexy, in spite of being made mainly of rubber, a supposedly sexy material.
To help matters along, we have heard reported that some shoots are installing special poles, in gateways, where the beaters may warm up with a bit of Poledancing, whilst waiting for the drives to start. This has to be applauded, the risk of strains and sprains is much diminished if a proper warm-up takes place beforehand.
